I first met Robert in 2004, as a timid PhD student looking to do some research on the history of the Canadian Red Cross. Over the 15 years that followed we became colleagues and friends, working to preserve the history of the Red Cross in various ways and laughing a lot in the process. It meant so much to see him at my book launch in 2017, because the book could not have existed without his many years of caring for the CRC archives. I will miss his sunny personality, and am grateful to have known him for so many years.
Robert will be sorely missed by his family and friends in the Ottawa area, at the Canadian Red Cross and in South West Ontario. He sought joy out of every situation and uplifted those around him with laughter and humour. I extend sincere condolences to Robert’s sisters and brothers, to his many nieces and nephews and, above all, to Ray, whose caring and love was so greatly appreciated. While we hurt and grieve Rob’s passing, we are consoled by fond memories and loving thoughts.
I worked with Robert for many years at the CRC, he was always so helpful and kind to me, we will miss him dearly. My deepest condolences to the Gourgon family.
