I literally just learned today of Rupert’s passing. I worked with him on many cross border bankruptcies and always found him to be a terrific and congenial colleague. I considered him very much a friend, but unfortunately lost track of him after he retired. May Rupert’s memory always be for a blessing.

I am sorry to read of the passing of Rupert – I transitioned from law to medicine over 20 yrs ago and now a front line health care worker . Rupert crossed my mind today and I came upon his obituary. I have fond memories of Rupert as a kind and generous colleague and I am glad he crossed my mind today – may he rest in peace and his memory be a blessing to his family

My greatest sympathy to Rupert’s family as you have lost a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. And we in the legal and business world have lost a colleague who stood out in the profession as brilliant, engaging , fair and decent. When Rupert was in court, everyone listened and gained from his wisdom. He was uplifting for everyone.

I was sad to hear of Rupert’s death and I hope the last three years were not too difficult for him. I knew Rupert through Osler, first as an associate and then as his partner. He was always committed to his client’s interests and unfailingly supportive of his colleagues. As others have said, he also had a keen sense of humor and he took the law seriously but not himself. My condolences to his family.

    • Richard G Tremblay Posted 2021-01-22 7:37 pm

I was very saddened to see the announcement of Rupert’s passing. I too was a lateral at Osler, and I always enjoyed dealing with Rupert. He was a very special person. He was supremely competent in his field but never arrogant even though his knowledge and experience would have amply supported such an attitude. I always wished I could have worked more with him.

    • Matias Milet Posted 2021-01-22 5:49 pm

I knew Rupert as a fellow member of the insolvency bar for several decades. He was universally regarded as a towering intellect., who was central in many of the most demanding and innovative cases of the time. Throughout this time I never heard a single person ever say an unkind word of Rupert. Everyone in the profession viewed him as honest, ethical, and the ultimate professional. It was an honour to have known him.
